It is important to be able to recognize damage caused by these insects and to understand their life history to know when to monitor for their presence and when to control them using integrated pest management (IPM) strategies. The second type is caused by larval feeding within the nut. When selecting a pecan variety, consider pollination requirements, length of growing season, cold tolerance, and scab resistance. Bacterial leaf scorch (BLS) (Figure 26) is caused by Xylella fastidiosa, a xylem-limited bacterium. Several rules of thumb for tree thinning are to remove trees when branches of adjacent trees touch, when more than 60 percent of the orchard floor is shaded during the summer at noon, or if a ring of light cannot be seen around the shade of a pecan tree at noon in mid-June (Figure 5). Commercial growers have a rule of thumb: They want to see sunlight at midday in the summer covering 25% of the ground under the trees. Both species overwinter as eggs in bark crevices. Central leader trees have a main trunk growing straight up with lateral branches (or scaffolds) from the main trunk spiraled every 16 to 18 inches (Figure 16a). Growing pecans requires patience and a long-term commitment. Pecan cracking devices crack the shells, which must be separated from the nuts. They require warm summers with warm night temperatures in order to produce fruit. The permanent trees must be identified at planting, making sure that the correct varieties for pollination remain after the trees have been thinned (Figure 4). Examples are ‘Caddo’, ‘Apalachee’, ‘Lakota’, ‘Prilop’, ‘Osage’, and ‘Kanza’. With grazing animals present, the proper pesticides may not be approved for this use, resulting in greater than usual insect and disease losses. But they are slow growing trees. Many people are under the impression that pecan trees only produce pecans every other year. This practice, however, is not recommended for new plantings. Summary. Information on the length of the season for a particular area, indicated by the number of frost-free growing days and the probability of frost in the spring, is readily available. You don’t want your pecan trees to be close to any other plants, especially a vegetable garden. But they are slow growing trees. Once the pecans are fully mature, they drop out of the husks and to the ground. Pecan scab occurs on the petioles, leaves, and developing nuts. The most practiced disease control measure for scab control is the application of preventive fungicides. Pecan trees are native to river valley soils and have a relatively high water requirement. Anthracnose (Figure 29), caused by the fungus Glomerella cingulata, is a disease of both foliage and fruit. Different pecan tree varieties grow to varying sizes and produce distinct nuts. This schedule will need to be adjusted depending on season, varieties, orchard history, and other such factors. Pecan Varieties Not Recommended for North Carolina Young pecan trees need 1-3 gallons of water per week. Depending upon conditions, drying will take between 2-10 days. When pecan trees are fully mature, approximately 20 to 25 years after planting, tree spacing should be approximately 70 to 80 feet between rows and also between trees within rows, resulting in six to nine trees per acre. Now when it is harvest time, a pecan tree can produce up to 50 pounds of pecans. Some pecan cultivars produce their first crop of nuts between 5 and 7 years of age. Nutrition in pecan orchards should be managed using visual observation, soil analysis, and foliar analysis. The best management strategy for these insects is sanitation by removing and burying or burning these twigs as soon as they fall from the tree.
