@mikstoI really think you are missing the point we are making: you are making a big deal out of a pretty niche application. There's a little bit more roughness at ISO 25600, but I'd still feel comfortable shooting JPGs at that setting. Both cinema5d and red do not postulate what you lie here. It still somehow feels way worse and not ergonomic than Nikon or Canon cameras without a grip. Sony's own A99ii will do 12fps with continuous AF. The oversampled footage taken from a Super 35 (~APS-C) region of the sensor is still expected to look better than the subsampled capture from the full sensor width but both are supposedly improved by the new processing chain. Now if you had simply stated you prefer an OVF that would be an opinion I couldn't argue with but when you imply something as a fact that I have proven to my self through actual experience I will take you to task. The a9 is the first in Sony’s professional series. The test that osv refers to:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KX1sfy__7A4it is indeed a proof that in AF-C Sony does quite well. They referred to "overly fast movement" pointing out clearly that A7R II is so bad it cannot handle fast movement well. But I am specifically interested in handling objects that move fast and filming them without either them or background getting skewed. "If you respond to my question it matters what I want.". There's just a bit more texture and distinct detail in the multi-shot files. The a7R III's foibles aren't great enough to prevent it from receiving high marks. If I am in AF-C mode with A7R III in low light I really have to take many shots in the hope at least one of them will come out in focus while it hunts. Can't start video until image buffer is cleared. We're only talking about an increase of 183 grams from the A7. They're still making tiny APS-C bodies as well as selling older models, shockingly there might be room in the market for both ends of the spectrum, only their system gives you both options... Kinda hard to fault them for that. This is simply not true as you can see a lot of others here highlighting the same problems in the comments to review. Honestly? How long the camera can keep that pace varies based on what type of files you're shooting and how fast your memory card is. But why would I do that? Sounds like the mirrorless equivalent to the D850..AF sounds like it is good but not as good, and write speeds not as good. I'll check bursts by looking at the timestamp, but the stopwatch method would seem to be pretty foolproof. Do you have proof of having shot around 300K with an A7RII? This is a godsend if you prefer to use a flexible spot for focus. Thank you. Below it, you find the Fn button, a control dial with a center button and four directional presses; Display, Drive Mode/Self Timer, and ISO are marked on the body, but as with most of the buttons, they're customizable. trying to have a coherent conversation with him is just feeding the troll. Not so good, and that SHOULD have been tested by the DPR. If I have a 16-35 G master lens and use it with the a7RIII in normal mode plus turn on the crop mode when required, do I get a lens that can cover 16 - 52mm, granted after 35 mm I will be getting only 19 MP with crop mode caveats. Frankly the exact number is impossible to arrive it but with that long and that high numbers the exact figures do not matter anymore. The camera ships with an external battery charger, but can also charge internally, and has two ports to support this. Even my Canon friend commented on this immediately when he tried my A7R3. Make the grip greater. They are F4 and there are no other cine lenses (at least natively). What are your numbers? Nice product, but extremely expensive here in Germany, and is only sold by specialized authorized dealers (no large mail order stores like Amazon). Sony's menu system is quite dense, with pages and pages of options, not all of which are easy to understand. .....remember how poorly spaced the AF points are on the Nikon. The Super35 frame is just slightly crisper, with a little more detail. What do you do in the studio when you want 1/200s shutter speed? Even if the light is reasonable but good contrast is not there Sony fails to focus while Nikon/Canon do. Please learn to read. It is not that Sony fans are too weak to lift heavy Nikons! No, just different. © 1996-2020 Ziff Davis, LLC. Everythingis1Does your handle imply that you like to use one word for all occasions? The sensor shifts by one pixel between each shot, so you get color information at each pixel site, eliminating the interpolation associated with the Bayer sensor design. I don't have the ability to do a lot of star shooting in the New York City area—there's just too much light pollution—but I did have the opportunity to shoot under dark skies in Sedona, Arizona with the a7R III. https://www.pcmag.com/reviews/sony-a7r-iii. The people who say they do not like EVF confuse me. Sony still has a point-and-shoot mind with one hand (with lots of menus), but I feel more comfortable in using two hands at the same time, and it's much quicker. So that is a clear lie that you do not.I personally find Sony to be less reliable in low light than Nikon or Canon. Or may be apart from giving the score with default weights also allow users to play with the weights depending on their personal weight and may be set their default weights? All relative to how you consider yourself - the same then applies to me. the article was very clear about that. So it is definitely a problem with A9 based on these observations alone. And I was hoping you may have anything of substance and wasted time giving more info to you so that you can tell me what exactly I do wrong. It's available in Canon EF, Fuji X, Leica M, M42, MFT, Nikon F, Pentax K and Sony E mounts and the first units are expected to ship in January 2021. Sorry man but you lost my interest. And seriously, are shooting weddings with an F4 zoom lens? Not to mention that if you are trained properly and you have proper custom buttons set up mf on a Sony can be fast and accurate. Hint: get a thesaurus. Otherwise sounds at least as good as d850. The Sony A7RIII marks yet another successful release in Sony’s Alpha 7 series of Full-Frame cameras. If you continue to fail to read so grotesquely bringing ever more irrelevant stuff you may get me laughing again as you once did already - you are close enough. armandinoWorrying about what your camera looks like is idiotic. You are so funny! Those numbers translate to real-world use—the a7R III is very noticeably faster to lock focus and fire compared with the a7R II. I would just like Sony to get their next model to be even better than a7R iii. Sony has a new software package to support tethered capture and Raw conversion, available for Mac and Windows systems. I found Sony A7R III lies it focused in low light too often - no numbers on the keepers there. Dual card slots. No doubt this camera will soon be a favourite one for video-makers and small budget film makers. Please dont tell me that you are all happy with the crumby menu system currently in use. All full frame cameras have problems with rolling shutter. This has nothing to do with the camera, and has everything to do with how the images wer processed, the taste of the photographer and what monitor he/she is using. Generally you would shoot 1.4-2.0 and you are hard pressed seeing A9 lagging in performance. I will wait and hope for a future model. unlike you, armandino has a website, and he has pics to back up what he says. What’s the best camera for around $2000? Unfortunately it seems that rolling shutter is still awful on Sony A7R III judging by this video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xbci2rM6BssJust look at UHD@25fps that starts from 25th second.A7R II used to be among the worst on rolling shutter and this one does not look great at all.I still want to see more scientific and comparable rolling shutter measurements but cannot find anywhere on the web. Well the proper system is more based on trust and experience than anything else, so when there's no more affordable way to see wether another system might do the job, why should you risk it? It's not really clear from this article (or I am missing it). Thank you for that.I only wish osv did the same and stopped wasting my time. Since the A7R III has failed the "Water Torture Test" it should be down graded with respect to the rating score. I can only stay my opinion based on my experience. Not sure A6500 is much better - it seems terrible in reviews. This camera inspires me. My guess about 2M with Canon pro bodies. Proven 42MP full-frame sensor. Chris and Jordan take a look at the new Sigma 35mm F2 and 65mm F2. It has good resolution, decent speed (7fps) that can be boosted (to 9fps) by adding a battery grip, and strong 4K video quality (but with slow focus). I'd love for it to work for me but I just found it unusable. This is what I have been taking about all along: i am not making objections to the limitations you are presenting, but the fact that you are presenting them all as deal breakers and the camera being inadequate or incompetent. >> 4:2:2 is already available with an external recorder. Ask Canon, they are especially good at that. And yes, I can definitely say that Canon/Nikon ergonomics are better than Sony's when it comes to comparing their top ILC offerings. let me think, I shot about 300K images with my A7RII, about the same with my A9. @ mikstoFrom a practical point of view there is virtually no need to shoot f2.8 or higher in -3EV, -4EV. The body eschews front buttons, save for a dial integrated into the handgrip, instead putting its buttons and dials on the top and rear. Its 24MP sensor is able to acquire and process data fast enough to allow for this, while eliminating the pitfalls you get with electronic shutters with slower readout—notably distortion caused by the rolling shutter effect and banding, which can be created by certain artificial light sources. A couple months ago Sony released a major firmware update for its a7 III and a7R III cameras that includes significant new features and functionality. We'll delve into this later in the review. If I point at the table corner then Sony focuses. Read our Sony A7S III Shooter's Report Sorry but I have little interest wasting time on you until you become constructive rather than denying. Since they use the same sensor why is the A7RIII limited to 10fps. Not mine. Tried that as well with Atomos but for retouching that alone is not enough and you strongly benefit from 10 bits or more to have freedom without introducing banding and you do not get that. http://www.geardads.com/sony-a7r-iii-review/, https://blog.kasson.com/the-last-word/sony-a7rii-star-eater-workaround/, https://petapixel.com/2017/11/14/sony-a7r-iii-star-eater-no/, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KX1sfy__7A4, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyPc7g_W6yg&t=606s, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7BG74w0gAw, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQXg38qaRuY, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xbci2rM6Bss, https://www.cinema5d.com/sony-a7rii-rolling-shutter/, http://www.red.com/learn/red-101/camera-panning-speed, http://www.staminteractive.com/distributors/calc_5.html, http://www.online-stopwatch.com/large-stopwatch/, Review: The DJI Pocket 2 is a vlogging machine you can take anywhere (even in your pocket), Review: the DJI Mavic Mini 2 is the perfect drone for beginners, Sony promises firmware updates for a7 III, a7R III and a9, improving AF, Nikon Z7 and Sony a7R III offer similar results in our image stabilization test, Sony a7/R III firmware 2.0 unlocks all AF modes with adapted lenses, Which is better: Nikon Z7 vs Sony a7R III, Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 for E-Mount Sample Gallery, Sigma 35mm F2 DG DN Sample Gallery (DPReview TV), Laowa 15mm F4.5 Zero-D Shift lens sample gallery (DPReview TV). It is just "catching up". It works just as it does with the a9. It is crap that AF depends on F-number. And only one out of 100 nailed the focus. @miksto"Let me disappoint you. I want better and want it clearly confirmed. When using a stopwatch your reaction time can affect accuracy. Finally, you get Play and Delete/C4. This is a design cue inherited from the a9. It makes a great travel camera but isn't as refine as the best of its rivals. Canon's best all-around SLR, the 5D Mark IV, doesn't pack as many pixels (30MP) and its Motion JPG 4K video codec isn't close to the a7R III's XAVC S option in quality or convenience. As I said the actual shake was so gentle that the frame has hardly moved but the shake/vibration got it into jello that did not die out for way too long and was just too awful to consider useable. "BS">> Nikon and Canon do not offer eye AFGiven Sony fails to acquire focus completely eye AF does not even come into picture in low light. Raw images show more noise, but also more detail, at higher ISOs. "Even if the light is reasonable but good contrast is not there Sony fails to focus while Nikon/Canon do", constantly re-posting lies about sony does not make you right, lol, it just means that you are trolling sony... watch this af test, a9 has better low-light af than d5:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KX1sfy__7A4. It remains a solid value proposition, as long as you're content with slower autofocus and 5fps burst capture. Flexible Spot is more useful on the a7R III than on previous iterations of the camera for shooting action thanks to the small focus joystick—it's very easy to move the point around. Take a closer look. I guess you never heard of PRIMES yet. I will just wait until cinema5d.com or someone else measures it. In other words who gives a shixxt? @Richard Butler > The scores are calculated from something like 40 parameters each of which has a specific weighting. And differently from you I do not miss my shots in low light with my Sony cameras. While they were out shooting their video about Sigma's new lenses, Chris and Jordan filled up a memory card with photos from the 35mm F2 DG DN using Panasonic bodies. >> I am not sure what sort of Hulk bumped you. Even A9 still on the specs alone is not great for low light AF compared to competition. @osvUnfortunately you told nothing useful thus far. Or tell me what am I doing wrong here:1) Enabled face detection2) Half pressed the shutter and Sony finds the face and shows green rectangle indicating it focused.3) I press full way.4) Checked the picture and it focused on the background. What am I doing wrong? This happens in low light but not in good light. There are a number of autofocus modes available. Write times are longer—39.6 seconds for Raw+JPG, 38.3 seconds for JPG, and 23.8 seconds for Raw. wrong again, it's your ignorant claims that are the problem: "UHD super 35 that is pretty much the only worthy mode", when you know for a fact that ff UHD has much less rolling shutter... but you stupidly refuse to use it. @miksto" D5 still would have focused where A9 would not since they went in that test to -3EV and only speculated on -4EV. You don't need to change any exposure settings, though, since the exposure system is designed to work at any sensor size. And extended battery/grip does not fix it either as I can feel where the two are attached and my little finger is right on that line and that feels uncomfortable/un-ergonomic. I'm shooting at 1/500 so the millisecond counter on the stopwatch gets captured clearly. In any event, you don't have to wait for the buffer to fully clear to start shooting again—it's possible to start filling it up again as it clears to the card. Still does not last a day despite much better than A7R II.4) Slow second memory slot completely kills the speed advantage of UHS-II if you want security of on the fly backup to second slot. Frankly it would not be a problem if only I did not see it being a problem in what I would consider rather regular uses cases in which I tried A7R III. Faster fps which is nice to have for wildlife and sports, but only if you can lock focus. They are way more important to me than you ever will be. Still on sensor and depends on F-number.2) Ergonomics. I find it hard now to imagine how an OVF can be better. He studied at RPI and worked on the retail side of the industry at B&H before landing at PCMag. I see it merely as catching up to DSLR's and other mirrorless brands, I would choose them over a Sony. I cant see a reason why they could not use the space to provide some simple controls that would reduce use of the menu. The top row of controls aren't at as steep of an angle as they are on the a7R II, so they're a bit easier to access. Richard, I tried your admittedly much more straightforward method with bursts of ~60 frames and HI+ does give me 10fps. My little finger is on the edge with no firm grip and easily slips off under the camera when I hold tighter. I've included pixel-level crops from our ISO test scene in the slideshow that accompanies this review for reference. I tried to get used to A7R II forcing myself to take as the only one on holiday and no - it is not about what you are used to. Does the camera offer a 1:1 square aspect ratio? And adapting is necessary as sony lenses in the telephoto range are more expensive (the 70-400 a slight bit more expensive, the 70-200 costs 50% more, the 500 f/4 costs as much as a Canon or Nikon 500 f/4 and 300 f/2.8 and 70-200 f/2.8 all together). You can do it ,Sony. Not recommended, sure, but what if you want to shoot a dark scene? I can lift 1005g I just don't want to be embarrassed carrying that ugly thing around. Sony has been growing its FE lens line at a fairly staggering pace. So cheap and dated focusing from Canon 6D nailed focus way better than A7R III in the night city conditions.I did not have a Nikon at the same testing place in the same conditions at the same time but when I used Nikon cameras in low light in different conditions I did not have the same focusing issues as with A7R III. It also completely removes shutter vibration from an image, which can make a difference when working with such a high-resolution sensor. I got the camera to play with for a few days and it still had a lot of bugging issues as far as I am concerned:1) Low light auto focus gives up way too often where Nikon and Canon snap focus instantly. Depending on which system you're in and what your needs are, they might just be the compact, well-priced and impressively sharp little primes you've been looking for. Burst shooting speed hovers around 10fps, regardless of what format you use. A7R III is nowhere near with -2EV on select lenses and this was a problem even in Xmas lit city in the evening.4) They seem to agree with me on ergonomics saying that "ergonomically A9 is more of a challenge". Now if only my wallet would allow it... What is the bit depth on the A7 R III when shooting uncompressed raw with mechanical shutter - single frame, 8 frames per second, 10 frames per second? It still requires good light and good contrast or you lose the moment. The 42 Megapixel full-frame sensor may be inherited from the Mark II but Sony's improved the processing to deliver superb quality. Of course for landscapes that wasn't the case because spending more time getting things just right but landscapes are only a small part of what I like to photograph. But, but.. it has eyeAf.. which is the most important thing ever (because Nikon & Canon don't have that), and on Canon you can't turn on your camera with on hand, you have to use both hands.. and now it has 2 slots instead of one which is, like, super innovative!! Amazing! A7R III was down right awful with this moon AF test though when it did the result was great.
